BEHIND THE CAMERA

I am the photographer behind this project of helping access to speech and language resources easier for therapists working in Africa (or in particular Uganda where I stay for short-term) I am Josie Jackson Photography and are based in Oxfordshire, UK but I made a decision to head to live in Uganda short-term in 2019-20 for my mission. I am currently a photographer who aim to create speech and language resources suitable for local people. This hits home as I have had speech and language therapy myself through my entire school life as a part of the support for me being profoundly deaf from birth. So I understand how important speech therapy in creating opportunities in people's lives or at least for me to be able to come to Uganda independently after my studies. Why I am creating resources in Africa? Then you probably like to find out more about the project!

WHAT IS THIS PROJECT?

As we discover the importance of speech and language therapy in developing one's language professionally, I notice working with speech therapists in the local area of Uganda that the resources were limited and outdated. There is also limited relevance of culture in the photographs for Uganda or Africa generally. For instance: A cup in Uganda is very different to the UK and western style, but it is both functional. Did you see yourself struggling to find something as simple as this? Let alone make a full resource for assessing, matching keywords and give clear visual instructions! So this means speech therapists like you working in Africa generally has to use a lot of the time creating new resources. So, to make life easier, I ensure that therapists can access my free online resources for their use. There are photographs of sequencing (tenses), African specific keywords, Opposites, a glossary so you can create your listening assessment! I hope my project here would support you change lives in Uganda or around Africa!
